How to Screen for Someone Who Actually Wants Kids in the Next 2–3 Years

Ask directly by date two or three: "I'm looking for someone who wants kids in the next few years — is that your timeline too, or are you thinking longer term?"

Pay attention to concrete language versus vague enthusiasm. "Yes, I want kids within two to three years" is clear. "I definitely want kids eventually" or "when I meet the right person" means they haven't thought seriously about timeline, or they're thinking 5+ years out.

This feels awkward because you're worried about coming across as intense or scaring people off. But here's the reframe: if clearly stating your goals scares someone off, they weren't compatible anyway. You've just saved yourself months of growing attachment to someone on a fundamentally different timeline.

One important thing: make sure you're genuinely ready for kids in that timeframe too, not just using it as a proxy for "I want something serious." If you're not actually prepared for parenthood within three years, be more honest: "I want to find my person in the next year or two, then start a family shortly after." Still filters effectively, but more accurate.

If you're a woman in your early 30s, you're allowed to be direct about this. Your biological timeline isn't negotiable, and anyone who makes you feel pushy for stating it clearly isn't the right person.
