Not Texting Back: Busy at Work or Not Interested?

Painful truth: if someone's interested, they text back within 24 hours. Not immediately — genuinely busy people exist — but usually within a day or two.

You know this already because you've been busy at work and still managed to text people you care about. A 30-second text during lunch or before bed isn't impossible, even during a hellish work week.

When someone takes 48+ hours to respond consistently, or gives you one-word replies that don't move the conversation forward, they're not prioritizing you. They might not even be doing it consciously — "busy with work" is a convenient story they're telling themselves too. But the effect is the same: you're not high enough on their priority list.

Here's the move: don't send a follow-up text. If they're interested, they'll resurface and probably apologize for the delay. If they don't, you have your answer without the indignity of chasing someone who's hoping you'll quietly fade away.

This is one of the exhausting parts of app dating — you're constantly trying to decode lukewarm interest. When you meet people through real-life connections or introductions, you tend to encounter more decisive interest (or clear disinterest), rather than this frustrating ambiguous middle ground.
