How Long Should I Keep Using Dating Apps Before Trying Something Else?

If you've been actively using apps for 6+ months and haven't had anything promising develop, it's worth questioning whether apps are the right tool for you.

Not because you're doing it wrong — you're probably doing it fine. But apps reward specific traits (photogenic, witty over text, high energy for meeting strangers repeatedly) that aren't actually predictive of being a good partner. Some genuinely great people are just bad at apps. They're better in person, they don't photograph well, or they hate the volume-based approach.

If that's you, you can keep grinding or you can try different channels:

  • Ask friends to introduce you to specific people they genuinely think you'd suit (not just "other single people in our orbit")

  • Go to things you'd enjoy anyway, where you'll naturally meet people with shared values or interests

  • Consider a matchmaker if you're serious about a relationship and current methods feel like a poor use of time — they handle the filtering so you only meet people who've been pre-vetted for compatibility and readiness

There's no magic timeline, but here's a useful signal: if you're swiping out of obligation rather than genuine optimism, or if "success" feels like enduring more mediocre first dates, it's time to try something else. Dating should feel purposeful, not like a second job you resent.
